2024 Wooden Structure Construction Industry Market Report

2024 marked a period of accelerated growth for the global wooden structure construction industry, with the market size reaching approximately

38 billion. Unlike 2023’s slight dip, China’s construction volume rebounded to 18 million square meters, driven by the “dual carbon” strategy—key projects included the Beijing Daxing International Airport Auxiliary Building (adopting CLT roof structures) and the Hangzhou West Lake Cultural Center (wooden curtain wall systems). Globally, the “wood substitution” trend deepened, as wood’s carbon sequestration capacity became a key metric in green building certifications.

Technological integration became a defining feature of 2024. The application of BIM+IoT in prefabricated wooden components exceeded 75% in multi-story projects, enabling real-time tracking of material quality and installation accuracy. Internationally, Norway launched the world’s first 12-story all-wooden residential building using modified CLT (fire resistance rating upgraded to 2.5 hours), while Canada developed bio-based adhesives that reduced formaldehyde emissions by 90%. In China, the “Digital Wood Construction Platform” was officially put into use, cutting component customization cycles by 40%.
Policy support became more targeted and actionable. China issued the “Guidelines for the Promotion of Wooden Structure Buildings in Prefecture-Level Cities,” providing subsidies of up to 150 yuan per square meter for public building projects. The EU updated its Green Deal Industrial Plan, mandating that 30% of new public buildings use wood-based materials by 2026. Market demand further diversified: urban affordable housing (accounting for 25% of residential projects) and rural revitalization projects emerged as new growth points, while the cost gap with concrete narrowed to 10-15% due to technological advances.

Challenges persisted but saw mitigation progress. Sustainable wood supply was addressed through China’s “National Wood Strategic Reserve Base” project, which added 5 million cubic meters of certified timber. Public acceptance improved with the release of national standards for wooden structure fire safety and durability, reducing concerns about long-term performance. Looking ahead, industry insiders predict that modular wooden construction and carbon trading linkage will become key drivers of growth in 2025.
